Calculations of the world population are done based on estimates and cannot be 100% accurate as the population of the world is not known to the last person.

The estimates of the world population are the Census Bureau’s estimate of the world population size and an indication of how fast it is growing.

Population In 2021: How many people are in the world?

According to the most recent United Nations estimates elaborated by Worldometer, the current world population is 7.9 billion as of August 2021. The number of people in the world was estimated to have reached 7,800,000,000 people as of March 2020.

The global population has grown rapidly since the early years when the world’s population was about 300 million people. In 1950, there were about 2.53 billion people living in the world.

It took over 2 million years of human prehistory and history for the world’s population to reach 1 billion and only 200 years more to grow to 7 billion.  In 2011, the global population reached the 7 billion mark and is expected to grow to around 8.5 billion in 2030, 9.7 billion in 2050, and 10.9 billion in 2100.

Globally, about 26 per cent of the world is under 15 years of age and some nine per cent is over 65 years of age. In Europe, the gap is much closer, with 16 per cent of the population being under 15 years old and 19 per cent being over 65 years of age. It is predicted that by 2050, the older population will outnumber the young in many developed countries.

Many regions have experienced vastly decreased population growth rates with the exception of a few countries like those in the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa. Fertility rates are likely high in these countries with high growth rates where women have on average five or more children.
