Andrés Manuel López Obrador, also known by his initials AMLO, is a Mexican politician who is the 65th and current president of Mexico since 2018. He was also Head of Government of Mexico City from 2000 to 2005.

His Early Life, and Education

Andrés Manuel López Obrador was born on November 13, 1953, in Tepetitán, Tabasco, Mexico. Andrés Manuel López Obrador is 70 years old as of 2024. Andrés Manuel López Obrador was raised in a middle-class family. His academic journey led him to the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), where he studied political science and public administration from 1972 to 1976.

His Political Career

López Obrador’s political career began in 1976 with the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), where he eventually ascended to the position of Tabasco state party president in 1983. However, he left the PRI in 1988 and backed the dissident presidential candidacy of Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas.

Despite his defeat in the 1988 opposition candidacy for Tabasco’s governorship, he later became the state president of the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD), a party founded on the basis of Cárdenas’s electoral coalition1.

During the 1990s, López Obrador gained national recognition for organizing grassroots protests against environmental damage in Tabasco caused by the state-owned Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) and electoral fraud committed by the PRI. He served as the national president of the PRD from 1996 to 1999.

In 2000, he was elected as the Head of Government of Mexico City, a position he held until 200512. After two unsuccessful runs for the presidency in 2006 and 2012, López Obrador was elected as the 65th President of Mexico in 2018.

In terms of his personal life, López Obrador has been married twice. His first wife was Rocío Beltrán Medina, with whom he had three children: José Ramón, Andrés Manuel, and Gonzalo Alfonso. After Beltrán Medina’s death in 2003, he married Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller in 2006. Together, they have one son, Jesús Ernesto.
