Camryn Manheim was born Debra Frances Manheim on March 8, 1961, in West Caldwell, New Jersey. She grew up in a Jewish family, with her mother Sylvia being a teacher and her father Jerome a mathematics professor.

Due to her father’s teaching positions, her family relocated several times during her childhood, living in Michigan, Peoria, Illinois, and eventually settling in Long Beach, California, where she attended Woodrow Wilson Classical High School.

Manheim developed an interest in acting after working at a Renaissance faire during high school. She graduated from UC Santa Cruz with a BFA in 1984 and NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts with an MFA in 1987.

Her brother is Karl Manheim, a law professor at Loyola Law School.

Manheim began her career working as a sign language interpreter at hospitals, a skill she later used in her acting roles. Her breakthrough was her one-woman show “Wake Up, I’m Fat” in 1994, which she later adapted into a book.

She is best known for her roles as Ellenor Frutt on “The Practice” (1997-2004), for which she won an Emmy and Golden Globe, and as Delia Banks on “Ghost Whisperer” (2006-2010).

Other notable roles include “Control” on “Person of Interest” (2013-2015), Lieutenant Cosgrove on “Stumptown” (2019-2020), and Gladys Presley in the miniseries “Elvis” (2005).

Her film credits include “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion”, “Happiness”, “Scary Movie 3”, and “Cop Car”.

Manheim has a son named Milo, born in 2001, whom she conceived via sperm donation from her close friend Jeffrey Brezovar. Milo is not deaf, even though there are rumors about his alleged deafness.

Manheim has been involved with the Los Angeles charity Bet Tzedek Legal Services, serving as a co-chair for their annual Justice Ball fundraiser. She teaches and lectures across the United States and abroad.
