Andrés Escobar was shot after scoring an own goal in a World Cup match against the United States in 1994.

In the 1994 World Cup which was played in the United States, Columbia was grouped in Group A along with Romania, Switzerland and USA. Columbia was the tournament’s favorite having beaten Argentina 5-0 to qualify for the World Cup. Pele even tipped the country to win the World Cup. Hopes were high.

But the World Cup dreams ended in a disaster after Columbia’s defender, Andrés Escobar, scored an own goal in a group match against the USA. A drug cartel murdered Andrés Escobar outside a nightclub in Columbia. Andrés Escobar was shot six times in his car.

Andrés was warned to stay away from the public but he said “I must show my face to my people.”

He met his untimely death at a nightclub in Columbia after he found himself exchanging words with people (drug barons) thought to have lost money due to the outcome of the football match. They followed him to his car and shot him six times. They shouted Goal! each time a shot was fired. The shooter was in the company of other two people.

Eyewitnesses gave the vehicle registration number of the murderer to the Police. Police checks revealed that the car was licensed in the name of one of the Gallon brothers, a drug cartel in Columbia. Humberto Castro Muñoz was identified as the shooter. He’s the bodyguard of the drug barons who is believed to have lost money as a result of the outcome of the match. Humberto Castro Muñoz was arrested.
