The 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards, which took place at Atlanta’s Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center on October 3, 2023, and was broadcast Tuesday night, brought both victory and defeat for some of the music industry’s biggest stars. In a surprising turn of events, Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Burna Boy found himself on the losing side, missing out on all seven nominations he received.
Burna Boy was nominated in several prestigious categories, including Hip Hop Artist of the Year, Lyricist of the Year, and Best Live Performer of the Year, but all of these accolades eluded him. Kendrick Lamar emerged as the victor in these categories.
Additionally, Burna Boy faced fierce competition in the Hustler of the Year category, where he was pitted against 50 Cent. The veteran rapper claimed the title, adding to Burna Boy’s list of disappointments.
In the Best Collaboration of the Year category, Burna Boy’s ‘Sittin’ On Top Of The World’ featuring 21 Savage faced stiff competition from Lil Durk and J. Cole’s ‘All My Life.’ Unfortunately for Burna Boy, victory slipped through his grasp once again as Lil Durk and J. Cole secured the award.
The losses continued for Burna Boy as he missed out on the Best Hip Hop Video for ‘Sittin’ On Top Of The World’ featuring 21 Savage, which was claimed by Lil Uzi Vert with ‘Just Wanna Rock.’ Burna Boy’s ‘Sittin’ On Top Of The World’ also lost in the Song of the Year category.
In contrast to Burna Boy’s disappointment, Ghanaian sensation Black Sherif had a night to remember at the BET Hip-Hop Awards. Black Sherif clinched the Best International Flow category, triumphing over notable contenders including South Africa’s late AKA and K.O, France’s Gazo and Ninho, and the UK’s J Hus and Central Cee. This win underscored Black Sherif’s growing impact on the international hip-hop scene and added another milestone to his rapidly ascending career.
The 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards brought forth both surprises and moments of celebration, highlighting the dynamism and competitiveness of the hip-hop music industry on a global scale.
