Stephens then attended the University of California. But he later transferred to Southern Methodist University (SMU).

While at college, he played football for both SMU and UCLA. Stephens originally wanted to play football at Stanford but he went back on his plans.
Stephens was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2021 NFL Draft. He was the 104th pick in the third round of the selection.
