Middleton gave his final performance via Zoom in July 2020. In Eugene O’Neill’s one-act drama, Hughie, he played a tired Times Square hotel night clerk from the luxury of his bedroom. Nobody knew at the time that this would be his final contribution to the world of acting.


Middleton died of West Nile virus complications on October 4, 2020, at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. His death left a vacuum in the profession, but his legacy was carried on by his remarkable talent and achievements.

In a moving homage, The Blacklist’s eighth season, episode six, titled “The Wellstone Agency,” was dedicated to Middleton’s memory. Huey Lewis even appeared in the show as part of Glen’s memorial.

Middleton is survived by his wife Elissa, whom he married in 2006, and his life serves as a tribute to his tenacity in the face of adversity.

Despite the physical limitations imposed by his disease, he beat the odds and maintained a successful acting career despite being diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis at a young age. Middleton’s unwavering spirit and devotion to his work continue to inspire countless people.
