Crystal Bowersox was born on August 4, 1985, in Elliston, Ohio, in the United States of America to Bill Bowersox and Kelly Bowersox. She has a twin brother called Karl. Her parents divorced when she was two years old.

Crystal Bowersox started her education at the Oak Harbor High School and went ahead to the Toledo School For the Arts. She was in choir and played flute in the school marching band.

Crystal Bowersox auditioned for American Idol in Chicago, Illinois. She sang “Piece of My Heart.” Guest judge Shania Twain commented that she had a “raw, natural talent.”
