Girlfriends is a British comedy-drama television series.

Girlfriends was first broadcast on ITV on 3 January 2018.

Girlfriends follows the lives of three middle-aged women who have been friends since their teenage years.

The series was written, created and directed by the late Kay Mellor and was not renewed for a second season.

Kay Mellor was also known for creating television shows such as ITV British drama Fat Friends (2000–05), as well as co-creating CITV’s British children’s drama Children’s Ward (1989–2000).

Kay Mellor wrote for the anthology drama series Dramarama before co-creating the long-running children’s drama Children’s Ward with her Coronation Street colleague Paul Abbott in 1988.

The series was awarded Best Children’s Drama in the 1997 BAFTA Awards.

Kay Mellor also created the soap opera Families which aired from 1990 until 1993, and wrote and starred in three series of the family show Just Us (1990–1994).

Kay Mellor wrote for the television drama serials including;

  1. Band of Gold (1995);
  2. Playing the Field (1998) for BBC One;
  3. Fat Friends (2000);
  4. Between the Sheets (2003) and
  5. Strictly Confidential (2006) for ITV.

Kay Mellor died 4 days after her 71 birthday on 15 May 2022.
