Sir Keir Rodney Starmer KCB QC was born on September 2, 1962, in Southwark, London, United Kingdom. He is of British nationality and is the son of Rod Starmer and Josephine Baker. He is the second of his parents’ four children. While his mother was a nurse, his father worked as a toolmaker.
Keir Starmer was raised in Oxted, Surrey. He went to the selective state Reigate Grammar School and was a junior exhibitioner at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama until he was. He graduated with a first-class Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of Leeds in 1985 and was the first member of his family to graduate.

Keir Starmer had his postgraduate studies at St Edmund Hall, Oxford, where he graduated from the University of Oxford with a Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) in 1986. He has served as a defence lawyer with Doughty Street Chambers; a Queen’s Counsel (QC), Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) as well as Head of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).
Keir Starmer became Shadow Minister for Immigration in 2015 and was the Shadow Secretary of State in 2016. He became Labour leader in April 2020 and has been a Member of Parliament for Holborn and St Pancras since 2015.
