Helena Modrzejewska or Jadwiga Benda, known professionally as Helena Modjeska, was a Polish actress who specialized in Shakespearean and tragic roles.
She was born on October 12, 1840. She was first successful on the Polish stage, but after emigrating to the United States, she was successful on stage in America and London, despite her weak knowledge of English.
Modrzejewska had roles in Bochnia, Nowy Scz, Przemyl, Rzeszów, and Brzeany during her early Polish acting career.
In 1862, she made her stage debut in Lwów, playing “Skierka” in Juliusz Sowacki’s Balladyna, in her first Romantic drama. She began appearing in Sowacki’s plays in 1863 in Stanisawów and Czerniowce.
Helena Modrzejewska had two children, one of them was Ralph Modjeski. Ralph Modjeski, also known as Rudolf Modrzejewski, was a Polish-American civil engineer who rose to prominence as a leading bridge designer in the United States. He was born on January 27, 1861.
