Former Ajax FC player Henk Groot died on May 11, 2022. He was 84. His death was confirmed by AFC Ajax in an online statement. “Groot appeared in 305 games and scored 207 goals for Ajax. Our hearts go out to his friends and family. His cause of death was not disclosed.

Between 1960 and 1969, he was a regular upfront for the Dutch national team, winning 39 caps. Groot joined Ajax in 1959 and made his debut in August of that year.

Groot went on to score 38 goals in 33 appearances that season, winning the Eredivisie Golden Boot. The following season, Groot repeated the feat, scoring 41 goals in 32 games to win the award once more.

In addition to individual honours, Groot received numerous awards. During his time in the Dutch league, Groot won three KNVB Cups during his time with both clubs.

Groot moved to Feyenoord in 1963 for two years before returning to Ajax, where he stayed until his career ended in 1969.
