African cup of Nations was first organized in the year 1957 and has since been held every two years since 1968 and afterward switched to odd-numbered years in 2013. The current African Cup of Nations is named AFcon 2021. This is due to the fact that it was delayed for a year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

AFcon 2021 was started in January after careful weather considerations by the Confederation of African Football.
