Connecticut U.S. Representative Rosa DeLauro has long been a prominent figure in American politics, known not only for her dedicated service but also for her distinctive fashion sense and unique hairstyle. Recently, she made headlines again, this time for a personal milestone that surprised many: at the age of 80, she got her first tattoo, and she did it alongside her 18-year-old granddaughter.

In a heartwarming statement shared on Monday, Representative DeLauro shared the touching story behind her decision to get inked at this stage of her life. “For her 18th birthday, my granddaughter wanted to get a tattoo with me. So, we went together,” DeLauro revealed, adding, “She’s off to college in the fall, and this strengthens our bond.”

The design of the tattoo holds a deeply personal significance for Rosa DeLauro. Located on her left upper arm, it features a delicate rose, which beautifully represents her first name, Rosa. The petal at the center of the flower cleverly forms the letter “D,” symbolizing her last name. Notably, the bottom left of the rose displays a stylized representation of Italy, paying tribute to the country where her father originally immigrated from.

Daniel Robillard, DeLauro’s press assistant, shared insights into the thoughtful design, underscoring the connection between the tattoo and her rich heritage.

While Rosa DeLauro’s tattoo may have raised a few eyebrows, she is by no means the first member of Congress to embrace body art. For instance, Pennsylvania U.S. Senator John Fetterman, known for his nine tattoos, often drew attention to his ink during his 2022 campaign.

As the dean of Connecticut’s congressional delegation, Representative DeLauro has tirelessly represented the state’s 3rd Congressional District, situated in the New Haven area, since 1991. Currently, she holds the esteemed position of ranking member of the House Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Subcommittee. In this role, she plays a pivotal part in overseeing federal investments in education, health, and employment.

While this may be DeLauro’s first tattoo, her recent venture into body art has sparked excitement about future possibilities. She humorously shared, “I have four more grandkids who still haven’t turned 18 yet. So be on the lookout for more new ink!”

Rosa DeLauro’s decision to commemorate her 80th birthday with a tattoo not only showcases her adventurous spirit but also strengthens the special bond she shares with her family. It serves as a reminder that age is no barrier to new experiences and meaningful connections.
