Maurice Moon Landrieu, a well-known political figure and patriarch of the Landrieu family has died, according to Ryan Berni, a family spokesperson. He died Monday (Sept. 5) at age 92.
Ryan Berni, a longtime friend of the family, who confirmed Landrieu’s death said; “He died peacefully this morning surrounded by family.”
How rich was Moon Landrieu? A lawyer and politician, Moon had an estimated net worth of $5 million at time of death, as per reports.
Moon served as the 56th Mayor of New Orleans from 1970 to 1978.
A member of the Democratic Party, he represented New Orleans’ Twelfth Ward in the Louisiana House of Representatives from 1960 to 1966 and served on the New Orleans City Council as a member at-large from 1966 to 1970.
Moon was also the United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under U.S. President Jimmy Carter from 1979 to 1981.
Current New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell on Monday remembered the late mayor as a “civil rights trailblazer and dedicated public [servant].”
She added that his “urban policy vision helped shape this city, and the racial coalitions he built in the face of division continues to inspire generations.”
Moon is survived by his wife Verna Satterlee, and nine children, including; former U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu and former Mayor of New Orleans Mitch Landrieu.
