On Sunday in Brooklyn, protesters barged the stage as the legendary competitive eater Joey Chestnut was in the middle of winning the 2022 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest for the fifteenth time.
Chestnut was eating his 18th hot dog when he was knocked out of position by one of the demonstrators, who was holding a sign that read, “Expose Smithfield Deathstar” and was wearing a Darth Vader mask.
Chestnut assisted in lowering the protester to the ground by placing his arm around their neck.
Chestnut picked up his hot dog again right away, and security took the protester away.
According to TMZ, three persons were detained and charges are pending.
According to a tweet from the animal rights organization Direct Action Everywhere, contest disruptions were made in opposition to Smithfield Foods, Nathan’s pork supplier.
Chestnut, who had to use crutches to get to the competition because of a ruptured tendon in his leg, went on to consume 63 hot dogs in 10 minutes to win the competition for the seventh time in a row. Geoffrey Esper, the No. 2 eater, came in second place, 15.5 hot dogs behind him.
