Bruce was born in Glasgow and raised there. Before becoming a chartered accountant, he attended Hutchesons’ Boys’ Grammar School in Glasgow. Bruce’s first job was car washing. He began his broadcasting career in Glasgow with the Hospital Broadcasting Service.

Bruce joined the staff of BBC Radio 4 Scotland. Following the launch of BBC Radio Scotland in November 1978, he joined Iain Purdon as one of the original presenters of Nightbeat. Charles Nove was later added to the presentation rota. In addition, he hosted a Saturday morning show.

He took over the mid-morning slot in 1980, and in 1983, he added a daily afternoon entertainment show. In the late 1980s, he hosted his mid-morning show on the BBC World Service.
