Veteran musician King Sunny Ade has paid a touching tribute to the late Onyeka Onwenu by promising to perform their iconic duet, “Waiting for Me,” in her honor for the rest of his life.

Onyeka Onwenu, a beloved figure in Nigerian music, passed away on July 30, 2024, at the age of 72.

During a condolence visit to Onwenu’s family in Lagos, King Sunny Ade made a heartfelt commitment to keep her memory alive through their music.

He shared that he will continue to perform the song, which they recorded together, in tribute to her.

Sunny Ade emphasized that he has previously performed the song in various countries, always acknowledging Onwenu’s contributions to their collaborative work.

He praised her for her musical insight and collaborative spirit, recalling how she often guided their performances with her exceptional talent.

Reggae legend Orits Williki also paid his respects, remembering Onyeka Onwenu as a staunch advocate for justice.

Williki noted that while Onwenu’s fight for intellectual property rights led to a significant Supreme Court victory, it is tragic that she did not live to see more of her efforts rewarded.

He expressed sadness over her loss but affirmed that her legacy will continue to resonate with her admirers.
