Kizza Besigye is a Ugandan physician, politician, and former military officer in the Uganda People’s Defence Force. He served as the president of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) political party but lost all presidential elections from 2001-2016 to the incumbent Yoweri Museveni.

Warren Kizza Besigye Kifefe was born on April 22, 1956, in Rukungiri, Uganda. He studied Medicine at Makerere University. He went on to work as Yoweri Museveni’s physician and was appointed as minister of internal affairs at 29 years when Museveni took power in 1986. He got married to Winnie Byanyima in 1988 and have a son with her.

Besigye married Winnie Byanyima, a Ugandan Member of Parliament, in Nsambya, Kampala on July 7, 1999. In 2016, she was also the Executive Director of the charity; Oxfam International. They are blessed with two children; Adam Ampa Besigye and Anselm Kizza Besigye. In April 2016, Anselm Besigye, who attended Oxford University won his bid and became president of the Oxford Union, a prestigious debating society.

Kizza was arrested by the Ugandan police after a police officer died during clashes in Kampala. He was charged with ‘unlawful gathering’ and was put on house arrest. The policeman was hit on the head with a stone when they tried to break up the gathering.
