Security provision by the central government of Ghana is the sole source of peace and stability in the country.
The government has established, tasked and funded the state security agencies with support from the laws of the land.
Here is a list of government security services in Ghana;
1. Ghana Police Service (GPS)
The Police Service is a single national institution under the command of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) who is subject to any direction/directives from the Police Council of Ghana.
2. Ghana Immigration Service (GIS)
Established under PNDC Law 226 in 1989, the Ghana Immigration Service is the only institution with the statutory mandate and responsibility to regulate and monitor the entry, residence, employment, and exit of foreigners in the country.
3. Ghana Armed Forces (GAF)
The Ghana Armed Forces a unified security force of Ghana, consisting of the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force. The Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces is the President of Ghana, who is also the supreme military commander of the Border Guard Unit.
4. Customs Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS)
The Customs Excise and Preventive Service is the Government of Ghana agency tasked with the sole responsibility for the monitoring, regulation, and inspection of exports into the country including border patrol. It is the security branch of the Ghana Revenue Authority which responsible for the collection of taxes.
5. Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS)
The Ghana National Fire Service is an institution under the Ghana National Fire and Rescue Service, an agency managed by the Ghanaian Ministry of the Interior. Its sole mandate is to deal with fire-related cases.
6. Ghana Prisons Service (GPS)
The Prisons Sevice is an institution under the ministry of interior responsibly for all the prisons housing sentenced offenders.
