Meet Tony Hale, The Man Behind Arrested Development’s Buster Bluth

Tony Hale, born on September 30, 1970, in West Point, New York, grew up with a rich background in theatre and academics.


His father taught physics, and his mother was involved in politics. During his high school years in Tallahassee, Florida, Hale took part in many plays and musicals.

Although he first aimed for a career in journalism, earning a degree from Samford University in 1992, his love for acting led him to further his studies at Regent University.

After graduating in 1995, Hale moved to New York City. There, he improved his acting skills at The Barrow Group and The William Esper Studio.

He also co-founded The Haven, a Christian arts community. Hale spent eight years in New York, working on his craft before getting his big break as Buster Bluth on the popular sitcom Arrested Development.

This role marked the start of Hale’s successful career, earning him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.


Hale continued to shine in both television and film, known for his perfect comedic timing and his talent for playing quirky, awkward characters.

He reprised his role as Buster Bluth in both the original series and its reboot.

Additionally, he voiced Forky in the Toy Story franchise and played Gary Walsh in Veep, a role that earned him two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
