The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Naomi Silekunola, the estranged wife of the Ooni of Ile-Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, in connection with a tragic stampede that claimed the lives of 35 children during a carnival she organized.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at the Islamic High School in Bashorun, Ibadan. Six additional children remain critically injured and are receiving medical attention.
Police Statement and Arrests
In an official statement, the Oyo State Police spokesperson, Adewale Osifeso, revealed that eight individuals have been detained in connection with the incident. Among them are 31-year-old Silekunola and Fasasi Abdulahi, the 56-year-old principal of the school where the event took place.
Other arrested individuals include Genesis Christopher, Tanimowo Moruf, Anisolaja Olabode, Idowu Ibrahim, and Abiola Oluwatimilehin, whose ages range from 25 to 52 years.

“The case has been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department, under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner of Police,” Osifeso stated, assuring the public that justice would be pursued diligently.

The police confirmed the severity of the incident, reporting that 35 children lost their lives while six others remain in critical condition. The tragedy has sparked conversations about the safety of mass gatherings, particularly events involving children.
In response, the Oyo State Police Command has increased patrols and visible security presence in the area to prevent unrest and maintain peace.
“Residents around the axis are advised not to panic as they would witness high-level patrols and visible police presence,” the statement added.
