The incident, described as an act of terrorism by the FBI, involved a pickup truck that intentionally plowed into a crowd on Bourbon Street, killing at least 15 people and injuring 26 others. The attack has cast a shadow over the city’s festivities, typically drawing thousands of fans for the annual football game.

Despite the tragedy, New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick urged residents and visitors to “continue enjoying” the city. Officials are working closely with local, state, and federal authorities to ensure safety in the wake of the incident.

In a statement, Jeff Hundley, Chief Executive Officer of the Sugar Bowl Committee, expressed deep sorrow over the attack, saying, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.” Hundley added that discussions are ongoing with authorities and promised further updates as they become available.

The game, featuring the SEC champion Georgia Bulldogs and the seventh-seeded Notre Dame, is one of the quarterfinal matches in the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff format. The winner of the Sugar Bowl will advance to the semifinals at the Orange Bowl in Miami Lakes, Florida.

The Sugar Bowl has long been a significant event for New Orleans, attracting thousands of fans and generating substantial economic activity for the city. While the attack has caused disruption, officials and organizers are working diligently to reschedule the game and ensure the safety of all attendees.

For now, fans are urged to stay updated through official channels as the city and its visitors navigate this challenging time.
