Robert Durst was born on April 12, 1943, in New York, New York, in the United States of America to Seymour Durst and Bernice Herstein. His siblings are Douglas Durst, Wendy Durst Kreeger and Thomas Durst.

On March 14, 2015, Durst was arrested in New Orleans on a first-degree murder warrant in relation to the Berman killing.

In 2016 he was transferred to California, and in 2018 a judge ruled there was sufficient evidence for him to be tried for the death of Berman.

Durst’s trial began March 2, 2020, but was postponed after six days due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After additional delays, the trial resumed on May 17, 2021.

Robert Durst has denied in open court his involvement in the death of his wife, Kathleen McCormack Durst and Susan Berman.
