They died in a car accident! Neila Biden, 30 years old and her 13-month-old baby, Naomi Biden, were involved in a fatal accident that took their lives.
The sad incident has shaped Joe Biden’s life and career as he recovers from the trauma of the death of his first wife and only daughter.
What Happened To Biden’s Wife And Daughter
In 1972, just some few days to Christmas, Neilia and 13 month old Naomi went for shopping and they got involved in a car accident after a tractor trailer loaded with corn crashed into their Chevrolet station Wagon.
Joe and Neilia Biden’s other two sons, “Beau” Biden III and Robert Hunter Biden survived the crash.
Beau Biden died 40 years later after he was diagnosed with brain cancer.
About Neilia Hunter
Neilia Hunter was born on July 28th, 1942 in the town of Skaneateles. She proceeded to Penn Hall preparatory school in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, in 1960.
She was the President and Vice president of the International Relations Club as revealed in the school’s yearbook.
Neila in 1962 then attended college sophomore at Syracuse University where she met Joe Biden who was then an undergraduate at University of Delaware. They met during spring break on the beach of Nassau.
Joe Biden married Neilia on 27th August 1966 whilst he was still studying in the law school in Syracuse.
Then, Neilia had also earned her masters degree in English and taught special need students.
The new couples who were now married moved to the suburb of Wilmington. It was at this point Biden practiced law and joined the New Castle County Council.
Neilia Political Party
Neilia Hunter was Republican before she met Joe but she registered as a Democrat s revealed by The News Journal.
They gave birth to Naomi, the youngest of three other children on 8th November 1971. Naomi’s nickname was “Amy”.
Mr. Biden first political challenge was when he contested against the Republican incumbent, J Caleb Boggs for Delaware seat in the US senate seat.
Neilia was his advisor and the brains behind his campaigns.
The Sad Moment
On November 1972, Joe Biden won the race. A week before Christmas, the new senator-elect was in Washington DC having an interview with staff members for his new office, then he received a call about the death of his wife and daughter.
Recalling words of Biden after hearing the sad news, he said: “my whole world was altered forever” in a speech to Yale University Graduates.
According to the police, Neilia mistakenly drove into the path of the tractor carrying a trailer of corns. She didn’t see it coming.
A lot of people, roughly, 1200 people surrounded the memorial service of Neilia and Naomi.
Joe Biden has said that it took him a longer period of time to heal. In 2017, his book, Promise me, Dad wrote:
“the pain … seemed unbearable in the beginning, and it took me a long time to heal, but I did survive the punishing ordeal. I made it through, with a lot of support, and reconstructed my life and my family.”
Joe Biden was officially sworn in as senator whilst he was besides his son at the hospital.
In one of Joe Biden’s speech at Yale University, he said:
“I can remember my mother – a sweet lady – looking at me, after we left the hospital, and saying, ‘Joey, out of everything terrible that happens to you, something good will come if you look hard enough for it.’”
