Britton, 53, admitted to 56 charges of bestiality and animal cruelty, and four counts of accessing child abuse material.

The Northern Territory Supreme Court learned that Britton filmed himself torturing the dogs, many of which died from the abuse.

He used pseudonyms to share the disturbing videos online. His crimes were uncovered in April 2022 following a search of his property near Darwin, which also revealed child abuse material on his laptop.

The court was warned of the graphic nature of the evidence, leading some to leave in distress. Chief Justice Michael Grant condemned Britton’s actions as “devious” and noted the “sickeningly evident” pleasure he took in the abuse.

Britton’s depravity was described as falling “entirely outside any ordinary human conception.”

Britton may be eligible for parole in September 2028 and has been permanently banned from owning mammals.

His defense claimed that his actions were driven by a rare disorder and read a letter from Britton expressing deep regret for the harm caused. Britton promised to seek long-term treatment and redemption.

Originally from West Yorkshire, Britton had moved to Australia over two decades ago to advance his career in crocodile research. He had worked with prominent naturalists, including Sir David Attenborough, and was a respected figure in his field.
