The Sound of Music is a musical that is based on Maria von Trapp’s 1949 biography, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. The musical, set in Austria on the eve of the Anschluss in 1938, tells the story of Maria, who works as a governess for a large family while deciding whether to become a nun.
Maria gradually falls in love with the children and their widower father, Captain von Trapp. He is ordered to accept a commission in the German navy, but he refuses since he is opposed to the Nazis. He and Maria agree to depart Austria with the children.
The Sound of Music had its world premiere at New Haven’s Shubert Theatre in October and November 1959, followed by a brief run in Boston. The musical closed on June 15, 1963, after 1,443 performances.
