When Abacha took over in 1993, Pastor Idahosa and some other bishops went to see him. He then said, “Abacha I did not come to pay homage, I have come to advise you. You cannot stay here without my prayer.”. He told Abacha that he should not treat Nigerians with impunity, and warned him to toy with Nigerians.

However, the general perception was that he had gone to pay homage to the former president.
