Moon Landrieu (born Maurice Edwin Landrieu) an American lawyer and politician who served as the 56th Mayor of New Orleans from 1970 to 1978 has died, according to Ryan Berni, a family spokesperson. He died Monday (Sept. 5) at age 92.

What happened to Moon Landrieu? How did Moon Landrieu die? Ryan Berni did not give details surrounding Moon’s death but said; “He died peacefully this morning [Sept. 5] surrounded by family.”

As mayor, Moon Landrieu championed integration in the city, winning him the respect of many Black voters when he opened high-ranking city jobs and contracts to African Americans.

As a city councilman before that, he led a successful push for a city ordinance outlawing segregation based on race or religion in public accommodations.


Current New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell on Monday remembered the late mayor as a “civil rights trailblazer and dedicated public [servant].”

She added that his “urban policy vision helped shape this city, and the racial coalitions he built in the face of division continues to inspire generations.”

The former President of the United States, Bill Clinton, released the following statement on Landrieu’s passing:

I’m saddened by the passing of Moon Landrieu, a towering figure in the history of New Orleans. He knew that we are stronger together than apart—and his inclusive approach allowed him to modernize his city while preserving what makes it so special.
