Hedman began his junior ice hockey career with the Modo Hockey organization in the Swedish J20 SuperElit. During his first full season in the league, he scored 25 points in 34 games in 2006-07. Hedman then turned professional, joining Modo in the Elitserien at the age of 16.

In the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, the Lightning picked Hedman as the second overall pick.

Hedman, who is widely regarded as one of the top NHL defensemen, has advanced to the James Norris Memorial Trophy final five times before taking home the trophy in 2018. Hedman won back-to-back Stanley Cups with the Lightning in 2020 and 2021. He also took home the Conn Smythe Trophy for the playoffs in 2020.
