He was a cavalry scout to the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armoured Division.

During his time in active duty, he received several medals including the National Defense Service Medal (2021), Korean Defense Service Medal (2022) and the Overseas Service Ribbon (2022)

Travis King was deployed for his first mission in South Korea in February 2022 as part of the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armoured Division.

His time in South Korea is nothing to write home about.  On October 8, 2022, around 3:46 p.m. KST (7:46 p.m. UTC), King was involved in an altercation with South Korean people in Mapo, Seoul.

When police officers attempted to question him, he continued his hostile behaviour without answering their questions.

He also repeatedly kicked the police vehicle’s door, causing roughly 584,000 (US$458) in damage. He later pleaded guilty to assault and destruction of public property and paid $1 million (US$783) to have the vehicle repaired.

Following assault charges, King was scheduled to fly to Fort Bliss, Texas, for “pending administrative separation actions for foreign conviction in the United States,” but instead fled the airport and crossed the Military Demarcation Line in the Joint Security Area (JSA) into North Korea on July 18, 2023.

King was detained by North Korean authorities on 18 July 2023 and returned to US authorities on 27 September 2023.
