American jazz composer, pianist, organist, and bandleader Carla Bley lived from May 11, 1936, to October 17, 203. A key participant in the free jazz movement of the 1960s, she is perhaps best known for her jazz opera Escalator over the Hill (released as a triple LP set), as well as a book of compositions that have been performed by a variety of musicians, including Gary Burton, Jimmy Giuffre, George Russell, Art Farmer, John Scofield, and her ex-husband Paul Bley.

Bley’s compositions started to be recorded by a number of musicians. Paul Bley’s Barrage was fully composed of her works, and George Russell recorded “Bent Eagle” for his album Barrage in 1960. Jimmy Giuffre also included “Ictus” on his album Thesis.
