Mariska’s breakthrough came in 1999 when she took on the role of Detective Olivia Benson in the NBC drama series “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (SVU). Her portrayal of Benson, coupled with her training as a rape crisis advocate, brought depth and authenticity to the character. Mariska’s outstanding performance earned her an Emmy and a Golden Globe.

Her commitment to the role extended beyond the screen, as she became a certified rape counselor, using her platform to raise awareness about sexual assault and domestic violence. The on-screen necklace worn by Benson in SVU, featuring pendants representing the Joyful Heart Foundation, seamlessly integrated Mariska’s real-life advocacy into the show.
Mariska Hargitay’s philanthropic endeavors shine brightly through the Joyful Heart Foundation, an organization she founded in 2004. The foundation provides support to survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, child abuse, elder abuse, and human trafficking.
