Gospel Singer and ‘American Idol’ alum Mandisa dead at 47

“American Idol” alum Mandisa Hundley has passed away at the age of 47.

The news of her death was confirmed by Christian rock radio station K-Love on Friday, April 19, 2024.

Mandisa, known for her powerful voice and sincere heart, died at her home in Nashville, Tennessee, on Thursday, April 18, 2024. The cause of her death remains unknown.

“Mandisa loved Jesus, and she used her unusually extensive platform to talk about Him at every turn. Her kindness was epic, her smile electric, her voice massive, but it was no match for the size of her heart,” said David Pierce, the media officer at K-Love.

Mandisa rose to fame after appearing on Season 5 of “American Idol,” where she finished in the Top 10, placing ninth. She was widely recognized for her talent and cited musical influences such as Def Leppard and Whitney Houston.

Born in California, Mandisa pursued her passion for music by studying vocal jazz at American River College in Sacramento and music at Fisk University in Tennessee. She released her debut album, “True Beauty,” in 2007, followed by her Grammy-winning album “Overcomer” in 2013.

Despite her success, Mandisa faced personal struggles, which she candidly shared in her memoir, “Out of the Dark: My Journey Through the Shadows to Find God’s Joy,” published in 2022. The book detailed her battle with depression and anxiety following the loss of a close friend to cancer.

Through her challenges, Mandisa’s openness and vulnerability helped others facing similar struggles find solace and support.

The news of Mandisa’s passing has deeply saddened her fans and the music community alike, as they remember her not only for her remarkable talent but also for her immense heart and unwavering faith.
