Alongside him, the Council of Ministers also stepped down. This move marks the end of the 17th Lok Sabha, the lower house of India’s parliament, which has been in session since 2019.
President Murmu accepted Modi’s resignation and requested him and his Council of Ministers to continue until the new government takes charge.
The current Lok Sabha’s term concludes on June 16. The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a majority in the Lok Sabha elections held on June 4.

The Congress party, a part of the opposition INDIA alliance, saw an increase in its seat count, winning 99 seats compared to 52 in 2019. This surge impacted the BJP’s representation in Rajasthan and Haryana.
Although the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fell short of an absolute majority with 240 seats in the Lok Sabha elections, its alliance with the NDA comfortably surpassed the halfway mark of 272 required to form the government.
Both the NDA and INDIA alliance are set to convene meetings later today with their respective partners to discuss the election outcomes and devise strategies for government formation.
