Tamale, a city renowned for its abundant supply of yams, is currently experiencing an unexpected surge in yam prices. Traditionally, this period sees a drop in prices due to the plentiful harvest, but this year has seen costs triple. Three medium-sized tubers, which typically sold for GH₵30, are now priced at GH₵70.

Hajia Memuna, a local yam seller, shared her surprise with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) about this unusual price hike. “The month of June is known for the abundance of the new yam,” she explained, attributing the surge to delayed rain patterns which have disrupted the usual supply chain.

The increase in prices has had a significant impact on her business. “I have recorded lower sales compared to other years,” she lamented, highlighting the dire effects of these price changes.
Another yam seller, Ms. Shemima Mohammed, noted that while yams can still be found at lower prices in some rural communities, the cost of transporting them to Tamale contributes significantly to the price hike. “Transportation costs have driven up prices in the regional capital,” she said.
Ms. Mohammed also pointed out that while prices per size might vary among sellers, the overall trend is clear: yams have become more expensive across the board in Tamales.
