Starting June 19, 2024, Ghanaian travelers can now acquire an electronic travel authorization (ETA) for Kenya free of charge, as announced by Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration.

However, Ghanaian travelers must ensure they apply for approval through http://etakenya.go.ke before their departure.
Previously, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo announced the elimination of visa requirements for all Africans by the end of 2024, facilitating visa-free travel to Ghana.
This visa-free policy will be one of the final initiatives Nana Addo implements before his term ends on January 7, 2025.

For many years, the African Union (AU) has promoted visa-free travel among member states, yet progress has been sluggish, with many countries prioritizing regional and bilateral visa-free agreements.
According to the African Development Bank’s Africa Visa Openness Index, only 28% of travel within Africa is conducted without requiring visas.

Currently, only Rwanda, Benin, Seychelles, and The Gambia allow visa-free travel for all Africans.
Kenya, which introduced a visa-free policy for Africans last November, has received criticism for its new arrangement, which includes requiring travelers to apply for an electronic travel authorization 72 hours before departure and pay a $30 administration fee.
For decades, Ghana and Kenya have upheld a mutual visa-free agreement, allowing citizens of both nations to travel between them without requiring visas or permits.
However, since January 2024, this agreement has changed with Kenya’s implementation of a purported ‘visa-free’ entry policy for all foreigners.
