The Rooneys are the majority owners and operators of the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League (NFL) since the formation of the franchise in 1933. Art Rooney was the founder and owner of the team until he died in 1988.

The Pittsburgh Steelers is a professional American football team based in Pittsburgh. The Steelers are the seventh-oldest franchise in the NFL and the oldest franchise in the AFC

How much did the Rooneys buy the Steelers for?

Art Rooney Sr. became part of the National Football League (NFL) family in 1933 when he paid a $2,500 franchise fee to found a club based in the city of Pittsburgh.

Rooney Sr. named his new team the “Pirates”. “Pirates”  was also the name of the city’s top Major League Baseball club. Rooney was a huge fan of this team since he spent his childhood in the shadow of the team’s stadium.
