How long is a governor’s term in Maryland?

Under Maryland’s first constitution of 1776, the governor was chosen annually by joint ballot of both houses of the General Assembly.

The governor is the chief executive officer of the State and commander-in-chief of its military forces. Headed by the governor, the Executive Branch of Maryland government includes executive departments, independent agencies and numerous commissions, task forces, committees and advisory boards.

Like most state chief executives in the United States, the governor is elected by the citizens of Maryland to serve a four-year term. Under the constitution of Maryland, the governor may run any number of times, but not more than twice in a row.

Elected by popular vote for a term of four years, the governor takes office on the third Wednesday of January following elections. No person may serve as Governor for more than two consecutive terms.
