Sally Clare Kellerman was born in June 1937, in Long Beach, California, the United States to parents John Helm Kellerman and Edith Baine Vaughn. Her mother Edith Baine is a piano teacher while her father John is a Shell Oil executive.
Sally Kellerman was raised alongside an older sister, Diana Dean Kellerman. Her younger sister, Victoria Vaughn (Vicky) Kellerman passed away in infancy. She attended Hollywood High School.

Sally Kellerman later proceeded to attend Los Angeles City College. She earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role following her portrayal of the character Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan in Robert Altman’s film M*A*S*H.
