Mother Mary Angelica of the Annunciation PCPA was born Rita Antoinette Rizzo on April 20, 1923, in Canton, Ohio, the United States to parents Mae Helen Gianfransisco and John Rizzo.
Mother Angelica’s father, John was a tailor by trade and had abandoned the family when Rizzo was only five. Her parents divorced two years later. She schooled at a parochial school and then attended Canton’s McKinley High School.
Mother Angelica founded the international broadcast cable television network Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) which became a global voice for Catholics as well as the radio network WEWN.

Mother Angelica continued to host shows on EWTN until she had a stroke in 2001 and has been living at the cloistered monastery in Hanceville, Alabama until her death. She died on March 27, 2016, in Hanceville, Alabama, the United States at the age of 92 from complications due to the stroke she had 14 years prior.
