Daniel Robert Elfman, an American composer, vocalist, and songwriter, was born on May 29, 1953. In the early 1980s, he rose to notoriety as the singer-songwriter for the new wave band Oingo Boingo.

Elfman was born to a Jewish family of Polish and Russian ancestry in Amarillo, Texas.
He is the brother of actor, singer, and journalist Richard Elfman, and the son of Blossom Elfman (née Bernstein), a writer and teacher, and Milton Elfman, an Air Force teacher.

Elfman grew up in a racially mixed affluent enclave in Baldwin Hills, California, where he spent much of his time at the local movie theater, finding classic sci-fi, fantasy, and horror films and discovering the music of Bernard Herrmann and Franz Waxman.

Elfman dated Kim Gordon, a classmate who would eventually join the rock band Sonic Youth, while he was a teenager.
His marriage to Geri Eisenmenger resulted in two children, Lola and Mali. Mali is an actress and film producer.
‘Do Not Disturb’, Mali’s 2011 film, was co-written by Elfman and Mali. Elfman tied the knot with Bridget Fonda on November 29, 2003.
