Cassidy was born on March 4, 1950, in Wangaratta, Australia to Bill Cassidy and Myra Cassidy.

He has five siblings Ron, Bill, Brian, Graham and Pam Cassidy.

Raised in the Victorian town of Chiltern, Cassidy attended Rutherglen High School.

Cassidy began his career as a cadet on the Albury Border Morning Mail in 1969, he moved to the Shepparton News a year later before being hired as a court reporter for the Melbourne Herald.

Joining the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, he initially covered state politics.

He moved to Canberra to become ABC’s federal political correspondent for radio and television in 1979.

In the late 1980s, Cassidy was senior press secretary and political adviser to Prime Minister, Bob Hawke. He has worked as a political correspondent for ABC TV News, 7.30 Report, Sunday morning political discussion program Insiders, and currently host the long-form interview program One Plus One.

Cassidy was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2018 Quill Awards presented by the Melbourne Press Club on 15 March 2019.

Barrie Cassidy and Heather Ewart have been married for years and together they share two children; Adam and Caitlin.

Cassidy has worked as a cadet journalist at the Shepparton News. She also interned with The Age, the Canberra Times, RMIT ABC Fact Check and the Lifted Brow. Global Hobo in Bali, the Australia America Leadership Dialogue in Washington, et al.

In 2021, she was runner-up in the Victorian rural press club awards for best news story; best feature and young journalist of the year.
