Shaun Ryder (vocals), his brother Paul Ryder (bass), Gary Whelan (drums), Paul Davis (keyboard), and Mark Day made up the original lineup (guitar).

Later, Mark “Bez” Berry joined the group onstage as a percussionist and dancer. In 1990, Rowetta joined as a second vocalist.

The group’s music helped to establish the Madchester sound by bridging the gap between the independent rock music of 1980s Manchester and the burgeoning UK rave scene.

With the releases of Bummed (1988), Madchester Rave On (1989), and Pills ‘n’ Thrills and Bellyaches (1990), the last of which was certified platinum in the UK, they reached their commercial apex.
