Scully’s death was annouced by the Dodgers. A cause of death was not stated.

The President and CEO of the Dodgers Stan Kasten in paying glowing tribute to Scully, said in a statement;

“We have lost an icon.”

“The Dodgers Vin Scully was one of the greatest voices in all of sports. He was a giant of a man, not only as a broadcaster, but as a humanitarian.”

“He loved people. He loved life. He loved baseball and the Dodgers. And he loved his family. His voice will always be heard and etched in all of our minds forever.”

Scully was a graduate of Fordham University, and he began his career with the Dodgers in their original home in Brooklyn, New York, when he was recruited by Hall of Fame broadcaster Red Barber to be the third man on the broadcast crew.

By 25, he became the youngest person to broadcast a World Series game in 1953 and when, two years later, Barber left to join the New York Yankees, Scully was the voice for the Dodgers.

In addition to Dodgers baseball, Scully called various nationally-televised football and golf contests for CBS Sports from 1975 to 1982, and was NBC Sports’ lead baseball play-by-play announcer from 1983 to 1989.

Scully also called the World Series for CBS Radio from 1979 to 1982 and again from 1990 to 1997.
