Hong Kong banker Vincent Cheng Hoi-chuen, the city’s first Chinese resident to become the executive director of HSBC, has died at the age of 74.

Mr. Cheng was appointed vice-chairman and Chief Executive of Hang Seng Bank in 1998 and on 25 May 2005, he became Chairman of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, taking over from David Eldon.
Mr. Cheng also became the managing director of HSBC Group and the Director of HSBC Bank Australia Limited and on 1 April 2007, he became Chairman of the HSBC Bank (China) Company Limited.
Mr. Cheng was appointed the first Chinese Executive Director of HSBC Holdings on February 1, 2008.
In January 2008, Mr. Cheng was appointed a member of the National Committee of the 11th Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), and a senior advisor to the 11th Beijing Municipal Committee of the CPPCC.

His previous government advisory roles have included Member of the Executive Council from 1995 to 1997 and a Hong Kong Affairs Adviser to the People’s Republic of China from 1994 to 1997.
Mr. Cheng was also a Member of the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Government from 1991 to 1995.
