Rhea Jo Perlman (born March 31, 1948) is an American actress. She played head-waitress Carla Tortelli in the sitcom Cheers (1982–1993).

Meet Rhea Perlman’s parents

She grew up in Bensonhurst in a Jewish family with additional roots in Russia. Perlman has a sister named Heide who is a television writer, story editor, and producer who worked on Cheers, Frasier, and The Tracey Ullman Show.

Philip Perlman, a Polish immigrant who was a manager at a doll parts factory, and Adele, a bookkeeper, were her parents. Her parents relocated to Los Angeles in the middle of the 1980s, and her father started working as a Cheers extra.

As he appeared in more than 30 episodes, his character grew to be recognized by his own name, Phil, and he was able to acquire a few lines over time. As a character actor, he developed a second career, acting in numerous movies and television shows, including Throw Momma from the Train, Hoffa, and Frasier.
