It was found 5.5 metres (18 ft) deep beneath the earth’s surface, at Premier Mine in Cullinan, Transvaal Colony.
Wells was the surface manager at the mine at the time.

Nine major stones of 1,055.89 carats (211.178 g) in total, were produced from the Cullinan Diamond.
King Edward VII had purchased Cullinan IV and gifted it to his wife Queen Alexandra and she had passed it down to Queen Mary, who later passed down the diamonds to her granddaughter Elizabeth II in 1953.
The Cullinans form part of the Crown Jewels, which belong to the King. The stone also sits on the head of the King’s Sceptre with Cross.
Seven other major diamonds, were personally owned by the late Elizabeth II.
