Born April 27, 1992, in Greensboro, North Carolina, United States, Allen had his education at Northern Guilford High School and the University of California, Berkeley.

As an high school player, he was outstanding on both sides of the ball for the Nighthawks football team.

He had also played in U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Aside football, Allen excelled in track & field, competing in sprints events.

Allen made a record of making a 40-yard dash in 4.56 seconds and was regarded as a five-star recruit.

While at the University of California, Berkeley, he played as a wide receiver.

In 2013, the Chargers drafted him in the third round of the NFL Draft and went ahead to win multiple rookie honors.
