Born on May 9, 2000, in Marshall, Minnesota, Trey began training as a footballer from a very young age, under his father, Carlton, who used to be a cornerback for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League.

Lance played high school football at Marshall High School, and he was the best quarterback in Minnesota at the time.

He proceeded to North Dakota State, where he played college football and won the Walter Payton and Jerry Rice Awards in his first year.
He got redshirted for the 2018 season, and in 2019, led the Bison to the 2020 NCAA Division I Football Championship Game. The same year, Lance was named the Most Valuable Player.
In 2021, the 49ers drafted Lance as third overall in the NFL Draft, and became the starter for the 2022 season.
Lance is a devout Christian and he has a younger brother, named Bryce, who plays at North Dakota State, but as a wide receiver.
